30 Social Media Tips for Small Business Owners

30 Social Media Tips for Small Business Owners

April 06, 20263 min read

Most social media advice makes things more complicated than they need to be. Here are 30 tips to cut through the noise, keep things simple, and remind you that you've got this more than you think.

  1. Social media platforms are just online meeting places. Treat them that way.

  2. Don't scroll for inspiration before you sit down to create. You'll lose an hour and end up more stuck than when you started.

  3. If writing captions is hard, don't start with a blank page. Brain-dump everything you want to say, then go back and edit it down.

  4. Use the same username across every platform so you can tell people "find us @yourbusiness" and leave it at that.

  5. Each post needs one job. What do you want the reader to think, feel, know, or do?

  6. Read your caption out loud before you post. If it sounds weird, it reads weird.

  7. Hashtags won't make you go viral. My own testing shows an average reach increase of about 9% on Instagram. Use them, but don't rely on them.

  8. People do business with people. Show your face, whether you're B2B or B2C.

  9. If a post flops, don't pay to boost it. Spending money on content that didn't land organically won't fix the problem.

  10. LinkedIn isn't just for job seekers. If your customers are professionals, it's worth your time.

  11. People are tired of over-produced content. Real, unpolished, and genuine wins right now.

  12. There's no age limit on social media. Post where your customers are.

  13. Paid social media advertising takes time, testing, and budget to work. It's not an instant fix.

  14. Sometimes low engagement has nothing to do with you. People bring their own stuff to your content.

  15. If you work with influencers or content creators, pay them properly. Exposure doesn't pay their bills.

  16. Outsourcing your social media doesn't mean handing it over completely. You still need to steer the strategy and give your person things to work with.

  17. That said, you don't need to approve every single post. Trust the person you hired.

  18. Most scheduling tools and video editing apps do the same thing. Stop researching and just pick one.

  19. Stories won't grow your audience. About 99% of people watching your Stories already follow you. Use them to nurture, not to attract.

  20. Mobile first, always. Most people will see your content on a phone screen. Design for that.

  21. On Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram, people scroll with the sound off. Caption your videos.

  22. On TikTok, people scroll with the sound on. Don't forget your audio.

  23. The more people engage with your content, the more people see it. Creating content worth engaging with is the strategy.

  24. Talk to people the same way you would in real life. That's it. That's the tip.

  25. Give people something to look forward to. Consistency and value will do more for your growth than any hack.

  26. Get to the point. Nobody finishes a caption that starts with three sentences of backstory before getting anywhere.

  27. You'll need to say the same thing more than once. Most people won't see it the first time.

  28. A viral post probably won't change your business. One good client from consistent, genuine content will.

  29. If you can talk to a potential customer on the phone or face to face, you can talk to them on social media. Same person, same conversation, different screen.

  30. Done is better than perfect. Post the imperfect thing.
