Why Carousel Posts Work So Well
You can upload up to 20 images in a single carousel post. But when your visuals are designed to flow from one frame to the next, they're far more likely to keep people swiping, and that's a smart way to boost engagement and stay in front of your audience.
Updated Sizing for Instagram (2026)
Instagram's recommended post size has changed. The current spec is:
1350px high × 1080px wide
This vertical format takes up more real estate in the feed, giving your content a better chance of being seen.
How to Make a Seamless Instagram Carousel in Canva
Step 1: Set up your Canva account
Sign up for a free Canva account, or log in to your existing one.
Step 2: Create a custom-sized design
Create a new design and choose a custom size. Set the dimensions to 1350px high × 1080px wide × the number of slides in your carousel.
For a 6-slide carousel, that means: 1350px high × 6,480px wide (1080 × 6).
Yes, a little maths is involved but it's worth it!
Step 3: Add guides to mark the frame joins
Guides help you see exactly where each slide begins and ends. Here's how to set them up:
Click File → Settings → Show rulers and guides
Hover over the vertical ruler until your cursor changes to a double-headed arrow, then click and drag a guide out to 1,080px
Repeat every 1,080px: so 2,160px, 3,240px, 4,320px, 5,400px (and so on for more slides)
💡 Shortcut: Grab the free template here - the guides are already built in! Just open it and go to File → Settings → Show rulers and guides to switch them on.
Step 4: Design your carousel
Now the fun part! Create your design across the full canvas. For the seamless effect, make sure some design elements (like text, shapes, or images) cross over the guide lines, this is what encourages your audience to keep swiping. When you're happy with the result, download the design as a PNG file.
Step 5: Split the design into individual slides
You need to cut your wide image into separate tiles. Here's how:
Head to the Pine Tools split image tool
Upload your PNG file
Choose to split horizontally, by equal height, with the number of blocks matching your slide count (e.g. 6)
Select PNG as the output format, then click SPLIT IMAGE!
You'll end up with 6 perfectly sized individual images, ready to upload.
Step 6: Upload to Instagram
Upload your 6 images in the correct order to Instagram. You can share them to your phone and post directly, or use a scheduling tool like Publer (affiliate link) to schedule from your computer.
