Welcome to The Social Smarty Scoop for the week ending the 30th of June, 2024. I have scoured all the social media marketing news over the last seven days, and I have all the updates that you need to know. Let's dive on in.
First up, Apple is enforcing its 30% service charge for boosting posts. Now, this is an update that has been a long time coming, and it has already rolled out in the US, but it is now rolling out worldwide. Now, this is only applicable for those of you using iPhones and iPads. When you boost your Facebook and Instagram posts from your device. Apple will be taking a 30% cut. Now, this has been nicknamed the Apple tax, and it is very standard across all apps within the iOS ecosystem.
What happens is you will go ahead and boost a post like you normally do in the Facebook app or the Instagram app. Instead of paying directly to Meta, so via your ad account, just like you would normally, you will now pay through your Apple account, so much like other apps and subscriptions on your device. Now, the kicker is, at Apple, it's going to take 30% of that fee.
Say, for example, you spend $20 boosting a post. Apple will keep $6 of that, and only $12 will actually spent on boosting the post. So your results are going to be significantly lower than what you would normally see for that $20 boost. Now, what's the solution? Well, moving forward, I want you boosting posts on Facebook and Instagram websites only. So jump on your laptop, jump on your desktop, boost your post that way. Or if you only have your iPhone or iPad, then just jump into Safari or Google Chrome, any browser within your phone or your device, and boost your post that way. Or, of course, you can create your ads inside Ads Manager. But just be aware, this is rolling out worldwide from July, so make sure that you're across this one if you're an iPhone or iPad user.
Next up, this one is from the 'FINALLY!' files. Now, Instagram is working on shared access. This means that you can invite up to three people who can post content, manage messages, and more without actually sharing your Instagram password. Now, this is within the Instagram app.
I'm not talking about business suite where you can already add someone, give someone access to your account and they can manage via business suite. This is literally getting access to your Instagram account in the Instagram app, and they can switch over and use it just like they would any other account, but you don't have to share your password with them. This is really exciting. This is something that I think a lot of social media managers have been calling out for, so it'll be great when this actually rolls out. One thing to note is if you do share access with other users, they can't delete or disable your account. Fantastic news. Can't wait for that one.
Next up, Threads is working on temporary posts. That means that when you post one of these types of posts, it will only last for 24 hours and then it will disappear. Really great for anything that's timely, last minute posts, or if you have a launch period where doors are about to close or an event coming up, that thing. I think this one will be really useful channel. Next up, Broadcast channels. So broadcast channels are coming to Facebook, but only for Facebook pages with more than 10,000 followers. So that rules me out. But what the heck is a broadcast channel? Well, it's a public one to many messaging tool for creators.
So if you want to blast out content directly to your followers via a chat or chat format, then that's what you would use your broadcast channel for. So think of it like blasting out a text message to a big audience, but via Messenger. Now, this is already a thing over on Instagram, but it's pretty exciting that it's coming to Facebook. Of course, we often see that things like this get misused by businesses, but we'll just have to wait and see how this one rolls out. Lastly, TikTok has published a new trend report. It is pretty long, but if you skim read it, you'll see these boxes that say marketer takeaway. I would recommend skimming through and just reading those boxes because there actually is some quite good information. I'm going to pop a link to that report, how you can access it in the show notes, so go ahead and take a look at that.
Lastly, not social media marketing news, but I wanted to share with you that I recently had the pleasure of chatting with Sandra Julian on her podcast, Business, Your Way. Now, I chatted about everything from why I started my business, how I've structured my business to work with my ADHD, spicy brain, and all my top tips for marketing your business on social media. I definitely think it's worth a listen. I'm going to pop a link to the podcast. Remember, it's called Business, Your Way. I'll pop a link to my episode in the show notes, and I'd love you to go over and have a look, a listen to that.
