Ew, ook at those crooked teeth. Wow, you've let yourself go. How much weight have you put on? Is that a grey here? Or that voice like nails down a chalkboard? Who would want to listen to you?
Hurtful words, right? The sort of words that you or I we would never say these to someone, would we? But these words are the things that I say to myself when I watch videos or I see photos of myself online. This is the sort of thing that I say to myself in my head. I'm just so critical over every part of me, like everything that makes me me. Yet I'm never like that with other people. I would never see someone showing up online, building their business and think those horrible thoughts. In fact, I often think the opposite. Like, wow, look at her smile. Or, Oh, I love his accent, or I love her curls, or she's so funny, I love watching her Reels. These are the sorts of things that I'm thinking about others. But why can't I think those things about myself? And why do I bother if I struggle so much with showing my face online why do I even show up?
Well, I know it's how I can reach and build an online audience. And I know the power in connecting with people. Like people people like to see other people online. It's the truth. And it's much easier for us to connect with a business when we connect with the people behind that business. Apple had Steve Jobs and now has Tim Cook. KFC has the Colonel and Social Smarty has me. And I know I can make a bigger impact with my business by showing my face. I can connect with more people. I can help more business owners to feel confident with using social media. I can book more clients. I can make more money. I can spend more time with my kids because I'm making enough money to allow me the freedom to take the school holidays off. It doesn't matter which way I look at it. I really believe that pushing through the discomfort of showing my face online is worth it.
We could look at it another way you can't expect to be seen if you don't show up. I can't take credit for that great pearl of wisdom. I heard Julie Solomon recently on an episode of Amy Porterfield's Online Marketing Made Easy podcast. Now, a little side note if you're not listening to that podcast. You are missing out. Go and search for it. Amy is amazing, but it's true. How can I expect my target market, my ideal client, my ideal customers to find me online if I'm not showing up? So I do it anyway. Even though my teeth aren't straight and even though I seem to always be trying to lose weight and the gray hairs just keep on coming, but I do it anyway. And little by little, I'm trying to change those hurtful words that I tell myself. Something I've started doing is picking one thing, just one simple little thing from the video or the photo that I'm sharing online. Just something that I can appreciate or praise. It could be, I don't know, the color of my eyes look really good in that photo. Or maybe I got my message across really succinctly in that video. Or my hair might be looking really shiny. It sounds silly, but by picking out something positive, just one little positive thing, I can really start to shift that voice in my head.
So if you're struggling to show up online and come out from behind your business, maybe you could give this a go too. Just pick that one thing that you can use to flip that negative talk to positive.
Now, I know today's episode has been a little bit different to my normal digital marketing tips, but if I can help you even slightly shift your internal dialogue or give you the tiniest nudge to show up online, come out from behind your business, show your face, then it was worth sharing today. And I think it also sometimes helps to know that you and I were fighting the same struggles. We're in this together. There are so many of us out there who feel the same way. So you're not alone. It is hard. Showing up online is really hard.
Now, I would love to hear from you. If this message resonated today, you'll find me over on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok @socialsmarty.co and if there's someone in your life who you think needs a little reminder about showing up, I would love for you to flip this episode through to them. Add a wee note, let them know how awesome you think they are, but encourage them to have a listen because it really helps me to reach more people, people that way.
Stay social, guys, and I'll see you back here for the next episode.
